A 24-year-old man has been detained in Fountain Valley in connection to the deaths of his 6-month-old son and the child's mother.

Anaheim police said a security guard at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital spotted a man that fit Kwame Carpenter's description around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday. The guard alerted a Santa Ana police officer who was at the hospital on an unrelated matter.

That officer and Fountain Valley police located Carpenter in a parked 2001 Lincoln Town Car on hospital grounds. When officers tried to take him into custody, Carpenter refused to surrender and drove his car into a Santa Ana police vehicle as well as an unrelated parked car, damaging both.

Carpenter fled the scene in his car. According to investigators, a Fountain Valley police officer fired two rounds at Carpenter, but no one was injured.

Police then chased Carpenter north on Euclid Street, where he crashed into a parked minivan. The driver of the minivan suffered injuries. The extent of the injuries were not immediately known.

That's when Carpenter got out of his vehicle, ran into Mile Square Park and went into a small lake on the northeast corner of the park.

A police dog ran after Carpenter and bit him. Officers placed him in cuffs and detained him.

Carpenter was expected to be interrogated by police after being medically cleared at a local hospital.

Police had been searching for Carpenter since around noon Monday, when officers were called to an apartment complex in the 2600 block of W. Ball Road in Anaheim for an assault in progress.

Investigators found a woman in her 20s suffering from serious injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The baby boy was rushed to a local trauma center, where he died.

Their cause of death has not been determined.

A 24-year-old man is being sought for questioning in connection to the murder of his 6-month-old son and his child's mother in Anaheim.

Police responded to a report of a felony assault in progress at the Kimberly Terrace Apartments in the 2600 block of W. Ball Road at about noon Monday.

Upon their arrival, they found a woman in her mid-20s and an infant suffering from serious injuries. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The boy was transported to a local trauma center, where he succumbed to his injuries. Their cause of death has not been determined.

"They rushed that baby away, and it was a pretty horrific scene because the baby was pretty bloodied up," said Kyle Elsbernd.

Witnesses told Eyewitness News it looked like the infant had been stabbed multiple times, and others described seeing a man running from the scene.

"I was just really afraid at that time cause you don't know if he could go inside one of our houses and hurt any of us," Alex Valadez said.

Anaheim police have identified Kwame Carpenter as a person of interest. He was described as an African-American male, 6-foot-1 inch tall, 150 pounds with short black hair, and was last seen in gray shorts and a T-shirt. He may be driving a 2001 black Lincoln Town Car Signature with California license plate 19990N1.

No further information was immediately available. Anyone with information on Carpenter's whereabouts was urged to contact the Anaheim Police Department immediately.
